Ikea Symfonisk speaker review: Sonos on the cheap
There's a new, cheaper way to buy a Sonos wifi speaker and it's from Ikea. The Symfonisk bookshelf speaker is the second of two new products born of a partnership between the Swedish furniture manufacturer Ikea and the American premium multiroom audio specialists Sonos. Together with the five-star Symfonisk table lamp, the new bookshelf speaker – the size of two hardback books – takes Ikea's design knowledge and slaps Sonos's best-in-class wifi speaker platform into it. The result is a new, lower-priced entry point into the Sonos ecosystem costing just £99 and undercutting the Sonos Play:1 by £50. Where the table lamp is more obviously a piece of furniture, the bookshelf speaker is a more traditional audio product, at least on the surface.
Ikea's new speakers are the most affordable way to get Sonos in your home
Sonos and Ikea are kicking off what has the makings of a long-term partnership in August. Next month, you'll be able to purchase the Symfonisk table lamp speaker ($179) or Symfonisk bookshelf speaker ($99) from your local Ikea or from the home furnishing store's website; these devices won't be available from third-party retailers like Best Buy or even directly from Sonos. They look Ikea on the outside, but both are very much Sonos speakers on the inside and seamlessly integrate with other products in the company's lineup like the Sonos One, Beam, Play:5, Play:1, and more. The goal of the Symfonisk series is to put speakers in places (such as the bedroom) where you might not ordinarily want something that screams gadget. If you've got a partner who prefers to keep tech -- even speakers -- out of there, they might be more amenable to the idea of an Ikea-designed lamp that also happens to pull double duty as a great-sounding speaker.
Sonos partners with Ikea for new Symfonisk-brand lamp and bookshelf speakers
Sonos and Ikea are teaming up for a new line of speakers. After previously announcing years ago that they would be working together, the two companies finally announced the first fruits of their partnership on Monday. Symfonisk, which translates to "symphonic" in Swedish, looks to bring Sonos' sound to Ikea's smart home plans. As with traditional Sonos speakers the new products will work with the Sonos app, be able to play music from the likes of Spotify, Apple Music and Pandora, and be able to connect to other Sonos-branded speakers that you may already have in your home. If you have two of the same speakers, i.e. two lamps, you can link them together to create a stereo pair.

Google Home Max review: An assistant for music lovers
Smart speakers like the Amazon Echo and Google Home have proved useful -- but they tend not to sound very good. Sure, they're serviceable in a pinch, and are better than most cheap Bluetooth speakers, but they don't compare to options like the entire Sonos lineup, let alone a nice set of bookshelf speakers like the Audioengine A5 . That's slowly changing, though: The Alexa-powered Sonos One speaker performs well and is affordable, while Apple's forthcoming HomePod sounded excellent in a brief demo we saw earlier this year. Google's Home Max is the company's first attempt to join the HiFi audio space -- it does everything that the smaller Home speakers do, but with significantly larger and higher-caliber components. Of course, that higher quality comes at a significantly higher price. At $399, the Home Max is more comparable with dedicated, higher-quality speakers.
